Sierra Leone Elections Update: One Year Later
On June 24, 2024, marking one year since Sierra Leone’s June 2023 elections, Electoral Commissioner Mohamed Konneh provided updates on the commission’s operations. In a press statement, he highlighted the registration of 2,789,808 voters, with 52.88% females and 47.12% males.
Konneh noted a significant reduction in invalid votes to 0.29% in 2023, attributing this to improved electoral strategies. Historical data showed a decrease from 7.30% in 2007 to 1.24% in the 2018 runoff. He emphasized the commission’s efforts in lowering invalid votes since 2007.
Additionally, on June 11, 2024, the commission submitted its annual and multitier elections report to President Bio, complying with section 32.12 of the constitution. The report includes gender analysis of candidates, voter turnout, elected representatives, and progress on the 2022 and 2024 strategic plan for electoral activities in the country.
Commissioner Konneh also addressed future plans, focusing on enhancing voter education and participation, particularly among young people and women. He underscored the importance of continuous improvement in the electoral process to ensure transparency and fairness in upcoming elections.
