Director of Crime Services at the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), Joseph Abraham Lahai recently announced a strategic shift towards intelligence-led operations in combating narcotics, particularly kush. This new approach was unveiled during a routine police press briefing at the Sierra Leone Police Headquarters on George Street, Freetown, on Monday, July 8th, 2024.

Lahai highlighted that under the leadership of Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu, the SLP has transitioned to an intelligence-driven strategy to target the distribution networks of kush. He emphasized significant progress, with the police force successfully disrupting 60% of these illicit networks in recent months. The commissioner affirmed the SLP’s steadfast commitment to eradicating the kush menace from Sierra Leone, citing its threat to the nation’s future.

Bolstering the intelligence apparatus within the SLP has been a key focus, Lahai noted, acknowledging substantial strides in dismantling key supply chains associated with kush distribution. He commended the collaborative efforts of community volunteers, whose involvement has proven instrumental in these operations.

In rallying national support against kush, Lahai urged all citizens to actively engage in safeguarding Sierra Leone’s future, stressing the critical importance of the ongoing fight for the nation’s well-being and prosperity.

Assistant Commissioner of Police John Martin Senesie (PhD), Director of Operations at the SLP, echoed Lahai’s sentiments, affirming the force’s achievements in curtailing illegal drug peddling activities. He reiterated the SLP’s unwavering commitment to sustaining these efforts as Sierra Leone intensifies its campaign against narcotics.

Lahai’s announcement marks a proactive stance by Sierra Leone in securing communities and striving towards a drug-free future for the country.
