Sierra Queens Reach WAFU Zone A Semi-Finals After Draw with Senegal

Sierra Leone’s national women’s football team, the Sierra Queens, have advanced to the semi-finals of the WAFU Zone A Women’s Championship following a 1-1 draw against Senegal on Sunday at Stade Lat Dior in Thiès.
The result secured second place in Group B for the Sierra Queens, ensuring their progression to the knockout stage of the regional tournament for the first time in the team’s history.
Sierra Leone opened the scoring in the third minute through striker Marian Jumu, who headed home after a defensive lapse by Senegal. The hosts equalized early in the second half, setting up a tense and physical contest in the remaining minutes.
Despite sustained pressure from Senegal in the closing stages, Sierra Leone held firm defensively, with goalkeeper Hannah Juana making multiple key saves. The Queens’ backline remained organized, frustrating the Senegalese attack and preserving the draw.
Head Coach Ernest Hallowell praised his squad’s disciplined performance. “The players demonstrated exceptional character,” Hallowell said after the match. “We anticipated a challenging encounter, yet they performed with pride.”
The Sierra Queens will face Mali in the semi-finals on Wednesday, May 29, with a spot in the final at stake.
