President Julius Maada Bio on 1st April 2026 commissioned a $6 million National Burns and Reconstructive Center at Connaught Hospital, marking a major step in strengthening the country’s capacity to treat severe burn injuries.
The 50-bed facility, funded by National Petroleum Sierra Leone Limited (NP SL) and Leone Oil Company Limited, is designed as a specialized unit to handle burn cases separately from general medical services.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Freetown, President Bio described the center as a “life-saving investment” that will improve diagnosis, treatment, and emergency response nationwide. He said the facility represents a critical milestone in addressing gaps in Sierra Leone’s healthcare system.

The project was conceived following the Wellington fuel tanker explosion, which exposed the country’s limited capacity to treat burn victims. Dozens were killed and many others injured in the incident, overwhelming existing health services.
Managing Director of Leone Oil, Ibrahim Cole, said the experience highlighted the urgent need for a dedicated burns unit. He noted that the new center, developed over the past two and a half years, will serve patients nationwide and support medical training due to Connaught Hospital’s role as a teaching institution.
NP SL Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Santigie Kanu said the project closes a major gap in the health sector and forms part of the company’s corporate social responsibility efforts. He added that the burns unit is the first of several initiatives planned for 2026.

President Bio urged the Ministry of Health to ensure the facility becomes fully operational as soon as possible, with adequate staffing and equipment.
He commended both companies for their contribution, saying the center will provide specialized care, surgical services, and long-term rehabilitation for burn patients, helping to ensure that the country is better prepared for future emergencies.
