President Bio Encourages Local Engagement in Medium-Term National Development Plan

In a vibrant ceremony held at the Moyamba District Council Hall in the Southern Region on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, President Dr. Julius Maada Bio formally launched the decentralization and popularization of Sierra Leone’s Medium-Term National Development Plan (MTNDP) 2024-2030. The President assured attendees that the Government is committed to prioritizing local needs in the plan’s implementation.
President Bio emphasized the significance of the event, stating, “This occasion marks a new chapter in our Government’s efforts to localize our developmental initiatives, placing the key to sustainable economic growth and development in the hands of the people. This initiative is not just a plan but a promise to every Sierra Leonean—a promise of progress, prosperity, and a brighter future for all.”
He highlighted that the Plan represents the country’s collective ambition and the Government’s dedication to sustainable development. Although initially launched in January, President Bio stressed that the true launch begins now as the Government transfers ownership of the Plan to the people across all 16 districts.
The President underscored the importance of localizing development efforts, stating, “Today’s launch is particularly significant as it underscores the importance of engaging every community, every district, and every citizen in the development process. Together, we will identify local priorities, mobilize resources, and steadfastly implement solutions that drive sustainable development in every corner of Sierra Leone. This is a collective effort involving all stakeholders.”
Madam Seraphine Wakana, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Sierra Leone, praised the Government’s initiative as a step in the right direction, highlighting President Bio’s commitment to inclusive development beyond the capital. She assured continued support for the Plan from the United Nations.
Madam Kenyeh Ballay, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Planning and Economic Development, expressed gratitude to development partners, particularly the UN, for their support. She assured that the priorities of districts were captured in the national document during nationwide consultations, ensuring no one is left behind.
Sierra Leone’s Medium-Term National Development Plan 2024-2030 aims to accelerate progress in food security, human capital development, and job creation, paving the way for the country to achieve its inclusive and green middle-income aspirations by 2038.
