SLRA Announces Mathehun Bridge Collapse on Makeni-Kamakwei Road
In a recent press release, the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) confirmed the collapse of the Mathehun Bridge along the crucial Makeni-Kamakwei Road. The incident, occurring on the night of July 10, 2024, was triggered by a heavily loaded truck attempting to cross the bridge, resulting in its impassability and significant disruption to commuters.
Prior to the collapse, SLRA had conducted inspections of the Mathehun Bridge and proposed maintenance plans, which were in the tendering process. However, the severity of the collapse now necessitates a shift in focus from maintenance to a full-scale reconstruction effort.
“While we prepare for the reconstruction of the bridge, we are actively working to provide an alternative passage to restore traffic flow temporarily,” stated the SLRA spokesperson. Efforts are underway to mobilize resources and engage partners to commence work on the alternative passage within the next 24 hours.
In the meantime, SLRA has advised commuters traveling between Makeni and Kamakwei in light vehicles to consider using the Kalangba-Lehondi-Gbendembu Road as a detour route. This alternative route aims to alleviate congestion and facilitate smoother travel until the main route is restored.
